Diamond Shoppers have become more sophisticated
and knowledgeable in recent years but this has been
offset by a more complex diamond market with a
variety of certification sources, diamond enhancement
treatments and much debate over what constitutes
great cut.
As a result, the services of an independent appraiser
has become increasingly important in helping diamond
shoppers avoid an expensive mistake.
To accurately examine a diamond and to be able to
determine if it is a diamond requires numerous special
and expensive tools that are usually only available with
a professional who works exclusively with diamonds
and gems.
APPRAISERS
Independent Appraisal Laboratories (like EGL and GIA)
don’t sell Diamonds and are Totally independent of any
diamond sales organization. Therefore, they are the
only places where it is possible to obtain a qualified,
un-biased opinion of a diamond.
The biggest problem with taking a diamond to a jewelry
store is the conflict of interest. It is comparable to taking
a Lexus to a Cadillac dealership and asking what they
think of the product. The jewelry store has everything
to gain and nothing to lose by saying negative things
about a diamond bought at another store.
DIAMOND CERTIFICATION
A Diamond Certificate (also called a “diamond grading
report”) is a document containing the characteristics
about the diamond that make up its value.
It is the pedigree that goes with the diamond and becomes
a valuable document in case of loss because it will ensure
that your insurance company will replace your stone with
another certified stone of like quality.
Certificates ARE NOT Appraisals since they do not contain
any information regarding the value or the price of a diamond.
APPRAISALS
Getting an insurance appraisal is wise financial protection
and is easy and more accurate if the the diamond has been
certified before being set into an item of jewelry. The diamond
weight is accurate and the insurance company is assured that
there are no flaws being hidden under the setting.
