SAN QUENTIN - 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE SPEAKERS CORNER MASTERPIECE

Johnny Cash was a country legend even during his lifetime, although, or perhaps because, he was very different from the numerous country singers with checkered shirts. When performing he chose to wear black as a symbol of solidarity with the oppressed and those who had no rights. His chosen outlaw image was just as convincing as the train-like boom-tiddy-boom sound of his rhythm group who lent their typical sound to many of his 500 songs. At the very zenith of his career, Cash (who himself had committed a few minor offenses) had the idea of singing and playing for the bad guys behind the prison walls for nothing. Initially his suggestion to market the live recording was rejected, but finally his record company decided to release the album At Folsom Prison. Fired by the success of his jailhouse recording, Columbia Records released At San Quentin shortly afterwards. The recording, in which Cash and his combo were frequently applauded more or less at the end of each verse, exceeded all expectations. Today it is still considered by Cash fans to be the best live recording by the "man in black.

1.  Wanted Man
2.  Wreck Of The Old 97
3.  I Walk The Line
4.  Darling Companion
5.  Starkville City Jail
6.  San Quentin

8.  A Boy Named Sue
9.  Folsom Prison Blues

Editorial Reviews

Johnny Cash's five-decade musical career was loaded with bigger-than-life landmark moments. None were more memorable than the Man in Black's historic concerts at Folsom Prison and San Quentin State Prison, and the beloved albums that documented those shows. Cash's passion for prison reform and rehabilitation inspired him to perform a series of concerts for inmate audiences, and two of these unique events were documented on Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison and Johnny Cash at San Quentin. These albums, originally released in 1968 and 1969 respectively, remain among Cash's best-selling and best-loved recordings. At the time of their original release, they revitalized his career, and played a crucial role in his crossover from the country music world to the mainstream pop charts.

Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison fully captures Cash's gritty intensity and hard-headed humanity, capturing a high-energy set performed for an equally spirited audience. With a set list tailored for the occasion, Cash focuses on songs dealing with crime and imprisonment, balancing dark subject matter with wry, playful humor. The album opens, appropriately enough, with the venerable "Folsom Prison Blues," and continues with such outlaw anthems as "Cocaine Blues," "25 Minutes to Go, "The Wall" and "I Got Stripes," alongside such Cash classics as "I Still Miss Someone," "Orange Blossom Special" and "Jackson," with the latter track featuring Cash's wife and frequent duet partner June Carter. The album closes on an inspirational note with "Greystone Chapel," a song written by convict Glen Shirley, which Cash and his band learned especially for this show.

Perhaps even more so than its predecessor, Johnny Cash at San Quentin captures Cash at his most raw and uninhibited. The artist's raucous rapport with his captive audience is obvious on an inspired mix of Cash classics ("I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues"), jailhouse ballads ("Starkville City Jail," "San Quentin"), traditional tunes ("Wreck of the Old 97," "There'll Be Peace in the Valley") and well-chosen covers (Bob Dylan's "Wanted Man," the Lovin' Spoonful's "Darling Companion"). The album's most popular track, though, remains the Shel Silverstein-penned novelty number "A Boy Named Sue," which became the biggest hit single of Cash's career.

These timeless examples of Johnny Cash's individuality and artistry are pressed on high-quality high-definition vinyl and have been mastered from the original stereo tapes, with exact reproductions of the albums' iconic original cover art.

Johnny Cash - The Christmas Spirit

Limited Anniversary Edition

Out of print for decades on vinyl, now it returns!

Pressed by RTI on white vinyl

Johnny Cash was a musical phenomenon and an American icon with his legendary musical career starting in the 1950's at Sun Records. His plethora of hit recordings led to a major move to Columbia Records, and the late legend charted recordings in all the major formats like country, rock , pop, folk, and gospel genres, sharing his legendary vocal, guitar and songwriting persona for millions of fans worldwide.

With 1963's The Christmas Spirit Lp, Johnny Cash teams up with producer Don Law (Ray Price) and created one of the most revered holiday and inspirational hit albums of all time. The album features Johnny's stellar interpretations of both popular and religious favorites like the definitive hit version of "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day," the Tex Ritter favorite "Here Was A Man," June Carter Cash's "Christmas As I Knew It," plus more traditional fare such as "Blue Christmas" and "The Little Drummer Boy." His impressive readings of inspirational favorites like "Silent Night, Holy Night," plus Johnny's own "The Christmas Spirit" and "Who Kept The Sheep," truly made the The Christmas Spirit Lp a groundbreaking effort for this sorely missed legend.

This fine album has been out of print for decades on vinyl, and it is our honor to announce the first time 180-gram audiophile vinyl presentation of The Christmas Spirit by the late great Johnny Cash on Friday Music. This limited edition audiophile masterpiece is now impeccably mastered by Joe Reagoso and also for a very limited time is pressed by R.T.I. on white vinyl for the holidays. Also, the LP features the original artwork not seen in years, in a first time gatefold presentation exclusively from the Columbia Records archives.

By the time this album was released in 1961, Johnny Cash had long-since left Sun Records for greener pastures. The album is therefore a compilation of songs Cash recorded while still under contract with Sun-from his earliest recordings in December 1954 to his final session in July 1958. This is a classic collection from one of the most imposing and influential figures in country music. His deep, resonant baritone and spare, percussive guitar style will never be duplicated. Detailed Description

"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash"

Those four words resonate throughout the world much as "In God We Trust" and other familiar phrases which have stood the test of time.

Yet the introduction is no more necessary than telling someone the name of the Mona Lisa when viewing the painting. Johnny Cash is a household name, and his career spans nearly five decades.

Few artists in history have enjoyed the successful career Cash has. Many people describe him as a mythical, larger than life figure. Others describe him as one of the greatest recording artists of all time.

Yet there is no one description which adequately fits The Man In Black. He’s a complex, unpredictable, ball of talent and energy that no one has ever been able to pigeonhole or categorize.

First time on vinyl, the birth of country cool! The Johnny Cash you hear on this remarkable live performances is not the venerable legend of today. This was the young, feral Cash, full of piss, vinegar and sly orneriness. Even to those who know every note, joke and guitar lick on Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison or San Quentin, hearing Cash in his prime, aided and abetted by the Tennessee Two, guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant, is a revelation,

This historic document sourced directly from the 1958 kinescope reels, capture Cash in his most revolutionary days, laying the bedrock of all that was to come and, despite age and infirmities, continues today.

Johnny Cash Johnny Cash With His Hot And Blue Guitar! LP

Premium Quality Black Vinyl Edition!

Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar is the debut album of the iconic country singer. Released in 1957, it was the first LP ever issued on Sam Phillips' Sun Records label. The album has been remastered and reissued on Premium Quality Black vinyl for at Record Industry in the Netherlands.

Johnny Cash and his music are one--blending to produce the kind of songs that bridge the gap from heart to heart. As Johnny says, "There are three things you can't get away from. Loneliness, that certain kind of woman, and God." And so the songs in this album echo the sincerity of Johnny's words and the universal truth of his experience.

When it comes to loneliness, you'd think Johnny invented the word. Naturally endowed with a rangy, big, hollow voice, Johnny's melancholy mood comes through strong on such blues ballads as his composition, "So Doggone Lonesome" or the old railroad folk song, "I Heard That Lonesome Whistle."

If there's an answer to man's loneliness, it's Woman. A woman can change a man's life completely. This is what Johnny says--a bit teasingly--in "I Walk The Line" (another Cash tune). This record, on single release, hit the top in the country and western field and also made "Top 20 in the Nation" in the pop field. Of course, you have to take the bitter with the sweet--hence, "Cry, Cry, Cry."

Backing up Johnny are two long-time friends, electric guitarist Luther Perkins and bass player Marshall Grant. They supply a strong country beat that never lags.

To hear a Johnny Cash album is to know Johnny Cash--the man, the lonely dreamer with a stubborn streak of realism which makes for strong and unforgettable conversation in song.
