DRESDEN/ROYAL VIENNA NAPOLEON PORTRAIT PLATE FRAMED ! fabulous antique porcelain portrait plate depicting
Napoleon Bonaparte in military dress uniform and wearing
the cross and Grand Eagle of the Légion d'Honneur.

(Napoleon's own decorations were captured by the Prussians and were
displayed in the Zeughaus (armory), in Berlin until 1945.
Today, they are in Moscow, Russia).

This portrait is of particularly high quality as is the gilding and
enamelling of the surrounding border of the plate.

The portrait is signed by the artist ‘Wehsener’, near the right shoulder.

The  painting is surrounded  by an elaborate border profusely decorated with
raised gilt patterns and fine jewelling   over a scarlet and turquoise blue ground.

The contemporary wooden frame is gilded and applied with gesso
mouldings of tendril-like flowers and scroll work in the Art Nouveau manner.

The reverse of the plate bears  the studio mark of Richard Websner 
 Dresden and the word Germany as well as the title: ‘Napoleon’.

The plate is in excellent condition. The gilding is lustrous and unrubbed.
There are no cracks, chips, losses or restorations present.
The frame is in good order with no losses other than some shallow flakes
to the back edge (side of frame) of the gilded surface.

Plate: 9  ½ inches (24.3 cm) diameter,
Frame: 15  ½ inches (39.5 cm) high x 13  ¼ inches (33.7 cm) wide
