An inexpensive, simple double bridle set that we have put together ourselves in the correct sizes. Suitable for a horse's first double bridle and for dressage, showing, hunting and polo.
The Weymouth has an Argentan mouthpiece which has a high copper content to encourage salivation with stainless steel cheeks and chain. A smooth, gently arched mouthpiece gives clearance for the tongue and doesn't interfere with the palate. The standard length, 7cm cheeks and 16mm diameter is suitable for all horses and has a relatively mild action.
The bradoon has an Argentan mouthpiece with stainless steel loose rings and a lozenge (peanut). The mouthpiece is gently curved to follow the contours of the horse's mouth and has a mild action.
Size of each set is as follows:
125mm (5"): 125mm Weymouth with 135mm (5 1/4") bradoon
135mm (5 1/4"): 135mm Weymouth with 145mm (5 3/4") bradoon
145mm (5 3/4"): 145mm Weymouth with 155mm (6 1/8") bradoon
155mm (6 1/8"): 155mm Weymouth with 165mm (6 1/2") bradoon
These are the correct sizes for both bits to fit correctly and work well together. As a guide to size, a horse that takes a 140mm (5 1/2") loose ring snaffle, will need the 135mm Weymouth set. This is because Weymouths are fitted lower in the mouth than a snaffle bit, where the mouth is narrower, so to ensure a correct fit with no mouthpiece visible outside of the horse's lips, it is necessary to go down in size by 5mm (1/4"). Similarly, a bradoon is fitted slightly higher in the mouth than a snaffle, where the mouth is at its widest, plus the bradoon must be slightly wider than the Weymouth to ensure there is no interference between the bradoon rings and the head (cheek piece slots/hangers) of the Weymouth.
Well made bits that are true to size (we have measured all of them), with all external parts 'silver' coloured for a neat appearance and a great range of sizes. We particularly like the fact that the mouthpieces are 'neutral' and comfortable in both bits so it is extremely unlikely that any horse would take a dislike to them (we can't say 'impossible' as horses will be horses!).
