By the time 1958 came around, rock and roll was well on its way to being the predominant musical style in the charts. Whilst other artists may well have got there first, it was Elvis Presley that was the spearhead to the movement, with Jailhouse Rock one of the stand out tracks of the year. It was to be his only number one hit of 1958, but there were plenty of other artists who took up the challenge Jerry Lee Lewis Great Balls Of Fire was another surefire smash. There was still room enough in the charts for other musical styles Magic Moments by Perry Como was the biggest hit of the year, spending eight weeks at number one and was recently revived in a television commercial. The biggest star of the year (aside from Elvis) was Connie Francis, who had two chart toppers in Who s Sorry Now and the double A side Carolina Moon/Stupid Cupid. Both these hits were to spend six weeks at the summit. It all added up to yet another year of diversity at the top of the British charts.
