n late 1966, Herbie Hancock with Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette entered a New York studio to capture the vibe of "swinging London" in a jazz mode ‹ with grooves that create effective bluesy moods on the slow pieces and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks. Meanwhile in London, the Yardbirds (with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page) were recording additional material for use in the Blow-Up movie soundtrack. Liner notes by maverick journalist Steve Dollar. Underpinning this jumping, multi-rhythmic, fathoms-deep groove music is the percussive power that Herbie Hancock, on squawking, scratching, stuttering, pulsing electronic keyboards, and Paul Jackson on thrumming, wah-wahing bass, add to Mike Clark's straight-up, rock-solid, propulsive drumming. From there, any band member can swoop and dive in celebration of Hancock's vibrant compositions. Bennie Maupin brilliantly deploys several horns in spare, soulful, and otherworldly ways. But listen carefully, too, for the broad palette Hancock employs in lead roles. He augments the streak of Bill Evans melodicism evident in earlier, acoustic years with sustained funk fire and shuddering R&B drive.

 Having long since established his funk credentials, Hancock continues the direction of Head Hunters and its U.S. successors here, welding himself to the groove on electric keyboards while Bennie Maupin again shines sardonic beams of light on a variety of reeds. In Doin' It, the most successful track, Hancock makes a more overt bid for the dance floor, for the tune is basically one long irresistible groove with a very commercial-sounding bridge. Again Hancock chooses to recompose one of his standards; Cantelope (sic) Island is almost unrecognizable, converted into a sauntering, swaggering thing. A streamlining process has set in - the drumming has been simplified, some of the old high-voltage drive has been muted - yet there are still enough enjoyable, intelligently musical things happening here to hold a Hancock admirer's attention.
