Roy Orbison Roy Orbison Sings Lonely And Blue

Roy Orbison's first album recorded for Monument featured "Come Back To me (My Love)" and "Only The Lonely." The third single for Fred Foster’s Monument label was “Only the Lonely”, which became the first song that truly probed the frightening potential of Roy Orbison’s voice, and established his uniqueness. The song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Charts and became number 1 in the UK.

A few things contributed to Roy Orbison’s success. The songs, the production, and the performance were key factors. The songs were completely original in structure, sound and style. Totally innovative compositions, that didn’t exist until then. It became a style. Fred Foster really went for quality instead of quantity. He was willing to splash money on a session without any guarantee of payback. He was also willing to take a chance on a sound that did not conform to accepted market norms.

Roy Orbison was one of the few hit-makers to hold his ground, and even to increase his popularity in the wake of the so-called British Invasion. He did it by maintaining a matchless quality of releases, with an original variety of content, structure, tempo and rhythm. He was also an extremely subtle song craftsman, making changes during the course of a session, or between sessions, adding the final commercial gloss to a song.

Selections:
Side One:
1. Only The Lonely
2. Bye-Bye Love
3. Cry
4. Blue Avenue
5. I Can't Stop Loving You
6. Come Back To Me (My Love)
Side Two:
1. Blue Angel
2. Raindrops
3. (I'd Be) A Legend In My Time
4. I'm Hurtin'
5. Twenty-Two Days
6. I'll Say It's My Fault

Roy Orbison Crying

Roy Orbison's second album features early Orbison production flourishes, with swooping strings and full vocal choruses. With such tracks as ''Love Hurts,'' the title track, and the epic hit ''Running Scared,'' most of the cuts lean toward Orbinson's more sentimental side. On the up-tempo side are ''Nite Life'' and ''Let's Make A Memory,'' with its bouncing string arrangement.

Selections:
Side One:
1. Crying
2. The Great Pretender
3. Love Hurts
4. She Wears My Ring
5. Wedding Day
6. Summer Song
Side Two:
1. Dance
2. Lana
3. Loneliness
4. Let's Make A Memory
5. Nite Life
6. Running Scared

Roy Orbison In Dreams

Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Songs of All Time - "In Dreams" - Rated 319/500!

Roy Orbison's 1963 album on the Monument label takes its name from the hit single which, in 2004, was named one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone. Besides the title track, the album also includes "Blue Bayou" and "All I Have To Do Is Dream."

In May 1963, and with the success of “In Dreams”, Wesley Rose eventually accepted an invitation for Roy to tour England on a bill with The Beatles, who meant nothing in the United States at that time. The tour was sold-out in one afternoon. On the first night, Roy did fourteen encores before The Beatles could get on stage.

3. Shahdaroba
4. No One Will Ever Know
5. Sunset
6. House Without Windows
Side Two:

Roy Orbison Oh! Pretty Woman - the first time appearance in the Monument Vinyl Box released on Black Friday 2013, this is what would have been Roy's fourth Monument album: Oh! Pretty Woman, the missing Monument masterpiece. Made up of songs recorded late in his Monument career and carefully selected by Roy's boys - his sons Wesley, Roy Kelton, and Alex Orbison - this album features specially created artwork so that it looks just as it would have in 1964, had Roy not left Monument.

Some songs have made their way onto hits compilations, like the title track "Oh, Pretty Woman" and "It's Over". The haunting "It's Over" (1964, #9 Pop) spoke of golden days before they end. It winds up to an Orbison crescendo that reminds you that you are on the edge of your seat, knowing not how you got there. "Oh, Pretty Woman" (#1 Pop): the smash of all smash hits. It entered the charts twice in 1964 and garnered Roy international superstardom and a million dollar contract with another label, thus ending a magical time, with magical people, making magical music at Monument.

Selections:
Side One:
1. Oh, Pretty Woman
2. Borne on the Wind
3. Leah
4. Evergreen
5. Indian Wedding
6. It's Over
Side Two:
1. Working for the Man
2. The Crowd
3. What'd I Say
4. Yo Te Amo Maria
5. I Get So Sentimental
6. Mama

ROY ORBISON - FOR THE LONELY: A ROY ORBINSON ANTHOLOGY, 1956 - 1965 - REALLY RARE RHINO RECORDS 24 TRACK DOUBLE RECORD PRESSED ALMOST 20 YEARS AGO & AUDIO REMASTERED BY ONE OF THE INDUSTRIES BEST BILL INGLOT (SMALL CUTOUT IN GATEFOLD JACKET) THIS COLLECTION IS SO RARE IT'S NOT EVEN AVAILABLE ON CD ANYMORE.

Equally adept with rockabilly, plaintive ballads and drum-pounding rock, Roy Orbison stayed on the charts for thirty years from the very beginning of the rock era. His greatest legacy though, comes from his soaring, gut-wrenching musical melodramas. Other than Gene Pitney, only Roy Orbison was able to achieve this kind of incredible power and pathos flowing from his songs, examplified by "Only the Lonely", "In Dreams", "It's Over" and the incomparable "Crying". This early ALBUM release from Rhino brings together most of Orbison's biggest chart successes from his early years. With more than two dozen charted records to his credit, this can hardly be comprehensive but does offer a condensed cream-of-the-crop collection of hits plus some rare tracks. Orbison's vocals and the instrumental backrounds come through in startling clarity. The musical backround provided by way of the liner notes booklet follows the period of the recordings on the album.  Of all the numerous Orbison Greatest-Hits anthologies available, this is the best and an excellent piece to build a more comprehensive Orbison collection.

MYSTERY GIRL - Tragedy of tragedies: Sun Records legend Roy Orbison passed away only a few YEARS AGO after issuing this sunny comeback in 1989. Rescued from the oldies also-ran circuit by his membership in the Traveling Wilburys--alongside fellow legends TOM PETTY BOB DYLAN GEORGE HARRISON and ELO's JEFF LYNNE the Wayfaring One implemented these stellar pals and others on Mystery Girl and even allowed his son to compose some lyrics for him. Wonder of wonders: his angelic tenor rang true on every track and set the stage for what might've been a huge pop-culture renaissance. No need to fret about the "if only"s. One spin through the radio-chummy "You Got It," and the "Pretty Woman" legacy is crystal clear. We're lucky he was able to record it.

Hank Williams The Roy Orbison Way was originally released in August of 1970. This album includes a rocking version of "Hey Good Lookin" with an arrangement that has horns following the bass line and actually starts off with loud dirty guitar. Roy's take on "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love With You)" is best described as uber-loungy. The trance-like "Kaw-Liga" is the divergence from the norm on this record. Starting with a slamming tom-tom drumbeat, "Kaw-Liga" is mean in the verses and honest country in the choruses.
