Waterproof and breathability explained:
Waterproof ratings refer to the column water height reached over a 1” x 1” area of fabric before water starts to penetrate: 5,000mm = 500cm = 196” = 16’ – that’s quite a lot of water on the jacket surface before penetration.

Breathability refers to the weight in grams of water vapour to pass through one square metre of fabric in a 24 hour period: 5k = 5,000g = 5kg of water vapour (or sweat!)
