A finely printed 8 pp 8" x 5 3/8" invitation to a BALL with a deeply embossed gilt emblem on the front cover captioned "Excelsior" with patriotic iconography. The Commissioners appointed by the Governor of the State of New York request the honor of your presence to meet The Guests of the Nation at the Metropolitan Casino, on the evening of Monday, November seven at ten o'clock. The invitation was dated Oct. 19th, 1881. The inside covers list the Commission and Managers. The inside pages are printed in gold ink and list the Guests of the Nation beginning with Ministre Plimpton- tiarire de le France aux Etats Unis,a representative of the office of the President of France, followed by numerous others including representatives of the French Army and Marines, the Minister of Beaux Arts, Les Lafayette, representatives of the families of the officers of Yorktown and Major-General the baron of Steuben.
