Following information from the book 'Comparatively speaking' by H D Skinner

4.49 Two - headed amulet height 9 cms

Material lightish Nephrite.  Collection of Murray Thacker who reports he purchased it from Ken Webster, London. stated to have been collected about 1850 in "Northern New Zealand".

Human body with two legs and arms, clearly rendered.  Other arm appears to be present, but this might also be interpreted as an extension of the beak of the head.

There are two avian heads, the other one being clearly rendered, with long neck and upper and lower curved beaks and tongue.

On the outline of the upper beak is the suspensory perforation which might also be interpreted as an eye.  However the artist has also rendered a second eye in low relief, in this case not perforated.

The eye of the head is perhaps rendered by the perforation, but an eye is certainly rendered by a slight cut circular depression.

The details of the second head are obscured by the much clearer right head.  In the Otago Museum Amulet collection two headedness occurs only twice.  The second example being fig. 4.124. In this case the two bird heads have much less details and are imposed terminally on a shell Matau.

Made in New Zealand by Elite New Zealand Carver in New Zealand Nephrite greenstone!
