Soapstone is a natural rock formation found in western Kenya.  In Kisumu, artisans cut and hand paint the stone to form the finished product.  The artisans are part of the "Jua Kali", the informal manufacturing sector in Kenya...named to reflect the working conditions of the region.  "Jua Kali" means "under the hot sun".
