LEDEBOURIA MACULATA
Drimiopsis maculata

A fascinating and unusual plant from South Africa where it is found in grassland among rocks in the Eastern Cape. A neat little low-growing bulbous plant with thick, wavy-margined green leaves that have very distinct, almost black leopard spots in profusion.
White flower stalks rise 6 to 12 inches above the foliage bearing a tight cluster of small bright white flower buds that open and turn to a pale green. Plant in light shade, in a well draining soil and irrigate moderately. It has been called "African Hosta"as leaf shape is similar, but much smaller.
Drimiopsis has an above-ground pseudobulb, It belongs to the silver squill (Scilla or Ledebouria) family. This is a shade loving plant that blooms late spring to summer and is relatively hardy. The bulbs should be planted half below the surface, protected from snails and be kept on the dry side in winter. Excellent for shady areas in your greenhouse and a nice addition to any indoor plant collection.
