The Tailgate Strut operates under high pressure to assist lifting the heavy tailgate
Items can be prone to wear, and early signs can be a wet residue where the piston rod enters the cylinder, indicating a leaking seal
Or the Tailgate will no longer stay raised by itself, and will drop as soon as released (being quite dangerous)
Total failure will result in the tailgate being very heavy to open and not staying open
