USS TERN AM-31 Memorial Pearl Harbor 1941 ship naval postal card with
pictorial postmark from Antes Fort, PA dated September 17, 2011. Blue photo printed

This vessel was alongside the flagship USS Argonne when the 7 December 1941 attack
started. Her crew was able to fire on the enemy planes with Lewis machine guns.
They were able to down one of the enemy planes.
The ship rescued 47 survivors from various ships. She then proceeded to assist in
fighting the fires the USS Arizona and on the battleship USS West Virginia.
The USS Tern served in the South Pacific and was became an ocean tug AT-142
serving until the war ended. She towed targets, transported ammunition
and searched for mines as an ocean going tug AT-143 and ATO-142. She was
decommissioned on 23 November 1945.
