The compositions of Dieterich Buxtehude constitue an cxceptional body of work within the framework of this collection of recordings devoted to the Northern German school of organ playing in the Baroque period. Its importance in both quality and quantity makes it the most important evidience of this tradition that was developed over almost a century in the larger cities of the region. His compositions have survived in various manuscript copies that were mostly made by his pupils during his lifetime. Bernard Foccroulle uses five historic and modern instruments in these reocrding of Buxtehude Organ works; these instrustments with their different characters cast new light onto the richness and the variety of this repertory.
