Here is a beautiful condition antique ETUI - NECESSAIRE which is empty .. it has lost the inside plate and sewing items which it once held.
Do not be put off by there being no items in it.. this enamel on copper box is in superb condition for its age.. its about 1760.
So it could be English Bilston - Battersea...or French... difficult to say really as they are all similar...you may be an avid collector of these and know straight away from the style of the hand painted scenes.
Its a dark navy ground with the white back ground scenes.. the top has two FLORAL designs and the bottom section has a COUNTRY scene of a church like building with a spire and a lake to the front with a tree to the left.
The other side scene is two LOVERS sat by a lake and two animals to the right hand side and foliage.
The design has added gold paint which sticks up further on the enamel metal and its rough to the fingers.. it has a fine cross-hatch design too as well as tiny little dots of gold.. which are all raised.
The gold paint now is quite faded .. the brass mounts of the lid and around the base would have been gilt when new as well making this a superb item to look at.
You can see it has been well looked after really as the oval enamel base is NOT cracked or damaged.. and usually this is the first place to be broken.
The very top has a floral design too.
A push button on the side and the top hinges open ..inside its white enamel in the lid and the base is black... remember though in a complete example the base has a gilt shaped metal inset which has different sized and shaped slots for the tools to fit in so you wouldnt normally see this black enamel inside part. 
This etui is a great item and will look well in your collectors cabinet with all your other items.
It is 4 inch tall x 2 inch wide at the hinged area x 1 and half inch wide at the base and 1 and 7/8ths inch wide at the top ... the width is just over 1 inch at the top x 3/4 inch wide at the bottom and wide at the centre hinge part.
