This is a serious collectors or Rowing museum quality antique if ever there was one.
As you can see its a fabulous shaped mauve leather box ...the bottom is shaped as well as the hinged lid... it has a small brass sneck ...the leather is slightly scuffed and rubbed on the corners and edges..it has kept the item in side in beautiful condition.
So un sneck it.. hinge up the lid to see a really wonderful miniature SILVER RUDDER.....inset into navy blue velvet.
Under the lid it is cream silk with the makers name on a paper lable.. this says 
MAKEPEACE and WALFORD Goldsmiths, Jewellers & Silversmiths. Serle Street, Lincolns Inn, LONDON.. Manufactory Red Lion St, Clerkenwell.
The silver rudder is of course a miniature from a ROWING BOAT a presentation trophy of the day.
This silver rudder is VERY IMPORTANT because of the engraved wording upon the front.. it says
WARGRAVE REGATTA
1853.
Hallmarked on the flat top as well as on the back....Young Queen Victoria bust ...makers initials I.G. ....unusual maker which I cannot find either.....and London 1853 hallmarks.

The miniature rudder is a work of art in its own right..very life like.... the two straps have been dotted to make them look like wood as well as the bolts etc..with the fine pins too on the spine... its really impressive and well made.

The silver rudder is 2.5cm x 3cm long x 26mm wide along the top... the top has a fine hole in each end.. the right hand hole has been made slightly larger ...as this was probably suspended on a chain or similar at some time.

The box is 4.5cm x 4.5cm x 3.5cm at the widest back corner.

So you just need to google below these websites to get a feel of whats what about this fabulous important silver rudder.
According to the website below Wargrave & Shiplake Regatta ...the regatta was officially founded in 1867 but they know of regatta's taking place since the 1850's...it goes on to say a Silver Rudder engraved with Wargrave Regatta and the date 1856 has been found .... well this is EARLIER than that one known being 1853.
