Banks's earlier voyage to Newfoundland and Labrador in the 'Niger' in 1766 is less familiar. This volume contains his diary of that voyage, his scientific manuscripts and a detailed account of his collections, on which, working alone as a field biologist, he gained the essential experience which enabled him to make the voyage of the 'Endeavour' such an outstanding success in the field of botanical and zoological exploration.
