P-38H Lightning of Major Tommy McGuire

The P-38 Lightning was a connsumate fighting machine. Though not as nimble as its smaller adversaries, the Lightning was a pure gun platform and with its powerful mix of machine guns and cannon mounted in the nose, it could concentrate fire extremely accurately. Used mainly in the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters, the Lighting became feared by its enemies.

Maj. Thomas B. McGuire was the second highest ranking American Ace of World War II. Dealing with the harsh tropical conditions in the New Guinea area, P-38s of the 5th Air Force helped wreck the Japanese war machine in the South Pacific. McGuire had 38 kills when he died trying to save a fellow pilot from an attack. “Pudgy” was an early P-38H model, one of the first effective types against the more nimble Japanese fighters
