Burma Shave

The whale
Put Jonah
Down the hatch
But coughed him up
Because he scratched

In 1925 Allan Odell pitched this great sales idea to his father, Clinton. Use small, wooden roadside signs to advertise their product, Burma-Shave. Dad wasn't wild about the idea but eventually gave Allan $200 to give it a try.  Before long sales began  to soar.  Allan and his brother, Leonard were putting up signs on every roadway...What began as a sales pitch soon began extending to safety tips, pure fun and old fashioned wisdom.

At their height of popularity there were 7,000 Burma-Shave signs stretching across America.  You would read first one, then another, anticipating the punch line on number five and the familiar Burma-Shave slogan on the sixth.

The red and white signs of roadside wisdom eased our journey, cheered us during the Depression and through the dark days of World War II.  In the late 1950's life changed, cars got faster and super highways replaced two lane roads.  The fun little signs were  replaced by huge billboards. 1963 was the last year for new Burma Shave signs.
