This antique celadon ceramic vessel is from northern Thailand and was most likely made at the end of the 19th century when the manufacture of celadon pottery, probably with know-how from Burma, recommenced in the north, particularly Chiang Mai and Lampang. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or repairs. The glaze has crazed and there is the presence of residue accumulated over time but we normally leave it to collectors to clean these old ceramic pieces.

The production of ceramics in Thailand began in the 13th century AD, possibly with the decline of Khmer ceramics. During the 15th century China was faced with an important crisis, opening the opportunity for Sukhothai ceramics to conquer export markets. Sukhothai wares have been found in Indonesia, the Philippines and China among other countries and were a very important article of trade.  In the middle of the 16th century, production at Sukhothai was discontinued, possibly related to the wars between the kingdom of Ayutthaya and the Burmese, and the resurgence of Chinese ceramics. The pot is 19.5cm / 7.7 inches tall and 10cm / 3.9 inches wide. The circumference is 33cm / 13 inches and it weighs 385 grams.
