This book is a study of a single new suburb, Levittown, New Jersey, in which the author lived as a 'participant observer' for the first 

two years of its existence to find out how a new community comes into being, how people change when they leave the city, and how 

they live and politic in suburbia. Levittown became the site of one of urban sociology's most famous community studies, Herbert J. Gans's The Levittowners. The product of two years of living in Levittown, the work chronicles the invention of a new community and 

its institutions, social and political life, and the former city residents' adaptation to suburban living.
