"This one required many plays for me to digest, and I'm likely to revisit frequently in the future. Palmer later reported on being 'troubled' at the time of making Shorelines, and it certainly sounds like it. Unlike many other troubled young men in the early 1970s, he felt the allure of electric music, aka Rock, and this album convincingly shows the advantage of rich instrumentation over solo acoustic work. Basically, Shorelines is a loner folk LP recorded with a full rock band setting. Some of Neil Young's quirkier albums could be described in a similar way, but despite the possible influence this doesn't sound much like Neil. Palmer has a near prog-like sense of drama, and knows exactly when to push and to pull. In that sense, and with the desolate vocal style, he sounds a bit like Dave Bixby gone electric. Dark, brooding songs slowly build around guitar and piano figures, until guitars (some fuzz, even), organ and drums come crashing in. "My spirit is broken" Palmer drones over a cacophony of sub-Basement Tapes rock, and produces a much richer experience than voice and guitar alone would have. Despite a few rough edges, the songwriting and arrangements are varies and interesting throughout. There's also rootsy, delta/Cajun element that recurs with good effect.
