Panerai is the most famous
Italian watch company. But keep in mind, Panerai is now produced in
Switzerland, not Italy. Originally founded in Florence in the 1860’s,
this “watch workshop” was commissioned by the Italian
Navy to produce a watch that could be easily read underwater. The
early prototype was actually fitted with Rolex parts.Giovanni Panerai and
his family had no idea, back in 1860, just how significant the Panerai
watch company would become a century and a half later. Panerai started
his business by producing measurement and precision systems for the
Italian Navy, which gradually lead to an affinity for watchmaking
and other precision instruments. The company continued to develop
in parallel with the Italian Navy, and the commandos were equipped
with wristwatches produced by Panerai. In 1930, Panerai watches were
well known in the Italian military and the company had an exclusive
contract with the Navy to produce their watches and aiming sites for
various types of weaponry. The ruggedness and durability of the Panerai
watches is still symbolic today, and the company only started producing
wristwatches for the general public in 1993.
The featured
watch is a Swiss made Panerai PAM 00818 Purdey Hawk in polished
Stainless Steel Engraved Cushion shape case measuring 44mm diameter.

Automatic Movement OPIII (Control Contrôle Officiel Suisse des
Chronomètres, C. O. S. C.), power reserve up to ± 42 hours.
Displays a Black/Grey dial with printed black Arabic numerals, 12
and 6 o'clock positions and Baton hour-markers. Luminous dots Index
hours markers around the outer rim. Silver-tone luminous Feuille
hands hour and minute at center, seconds marker divisions track
center dial. Seconds sub-dial at the 9 o'clock position. Date window
with cyclops magnification display at 3 o'clock. Stainless Steel with
hinged engraved gold Hawk motif case cover in typical Purdey style,
crown with lock-out, and screw-down, solid caseback. Scratch
resistant Sapphire Crystal. Brown Leather strap with Panerai
Stainless Steel Tang buckle. Water Resistant to 50 m/165ft. Display
signed “Panerai” Caseback signed & numbered, Movement concealed.

Introduced in 2005 as part of the third series of Panerai for Purdey
models, the PAM 818.... This watch is a very rare PAM series. The
year of the Lion is associated with a Earthly symbol. The same 12
animals are also used to symbolize the cycle of hours in the day, each
being associated with a two-hour time period. All Sealand models have
a case cover engraved by hand. When you take a close look at this
watch you can not help but to admire the the beauty and craftsmanship
that has gone into this Special Edition Lion motif watch lid.
Hammered, gold leaf trim, skilled artistry, sealand defined by its
hand engraving. The themes and covers of sealand are celebrations of
unique animals that have a tradition, region or cause. The watch is
pure Panerai designed. The metallic treatment on the main dial
contrasting silver at the sub seconds location with the insert
reflecting mirror on the inner lid of the motif makes this sealand
watch exceptional and rare. Produced with extreme finesse, every
touch of the cover of our Sealand is a pleasure. As for the rest,
