This is just my own research:

George McLagan was the partner of Porteous and Mclagan which started at the Scrimgeour mills on Mill (now Douglas) in 1886, and was the top competitor of Joseph Orr who built the first modern factory in 1884 at Stratford, which was the largest home of furniture industry in Canada on the 1st half of 20th century.

In 1897, George Mclagan became the sole owner of the company, and due to his craftsmanship and great ideas, the company took-the-top and led the industry in Stratford, which brought Joseph Orr turned its operation down, short after merging with a large company in 1901.

The George McLagan Co. LTD. continued to be the leader in the industry until even after the death of George in 1918 and lasted till the 1930’s, and somewhere from 1920’s the name of the company was change to The McLagan Co. Ltd.

This item was sold by ‘’The George McLagan Co. Ltd’’ to E.J. Coles Co. which Has built the Empire Store in 1893, at 399 Dundas Street, selling chinaware, tea, coffee and crockery. Business went well, and in 1902, E.J. Coles relocated his business to a new building at 493-494 Dundas. Renamed the E.J. Coles Co., it was now a large department store selling furniture, chinaware, hardware, floor coverings, draperies and a full line of groceries.

With the information above, this piece is probably made before 1902, maybe in late 1800’s..

I would appreciate any historical information, suggestions, and offers if there is any for this item.

Thank you.
