FYI:
We get the question frequently about what the listed thermostat temperature means. I'll try to address it hear:
Thermostats have a “rated” temperature (such as 160F, 170F, or 180F) This is
the temperature the thermostat will start to open, releasing heated
coolant from the engine into the radiator. The thermostat will fully
open once the coolant gets another ten or fifteen degrees warmer.
It is a great idea to replace your thermostat as a preventative measure, especially if you system is more than 5 years old...
Many
fitments. See list above & below. This setup can allow better
cooling than the factory thermostat if your factory thermostat is either
a 190-195° thermostat. A 180° can keep your engine a little bit cooler
& under certain conditions can be beneficial & preferred.
As
stated this thermostat is rated at 180 degrees and will fit
applications that take the listed cross-reference part numbers, although
those part numbers may be rated at different temperatures. Please use
this thermostat kit "only" if you know you want a 180 degree thermostat.
We also carry other temperature thermostat kits that may be correct or a better choice if you want
a factory temperature thermostat. If you are unsure, please contact me
for help. Certain model Fords may trip a check engine light if the
temperature is not what the computer is expecting or if it does not
reach a certain operating temperature within a certain amount of time.
Generally this can happen if the thermostat is stuck open or if it opens
at a too-low temperature (usually when going bad). Generally the 180
degree is within the acceptable range, especially on older vehicles. Your individual results may vary & needs
may be different, so choose your temperature accordingly.
We also
carry this setup in a 160°, 192° & 195° kit for those who want to replace the
thermostat with the factory rated temperature. In cooler climates or in
the winter months a 195° may be preferred. Look in out other listings
for that kit. See details below. This is a high
quality thermostat made by MotoRad. We carry a similar kit
in both 160° & 195 degrees in out other listings.
Thermostat temperatures we normally carry for the small block Ford
160°, 192° & 195° - check out other listings for these various kits. Cannot find what you need? Just message us for assistance.
UPDATE: We also have a thermostat housing kit that will include both a new housing and thermostat in another listing.
