”With muffled drums and measured tread the little band of battle marked and time scarred veterans—honored heroes of the noble army that fought to preserve the Union—marched through the cemetery that lay sleeping on the southward sloping hillside. The balmy breath of springtime was in the air, and when they passed onward, after pausing at the last resting place of some dead comrade, the sweet perfume of flowers rose from the green grass that grew above the departed soldier’s breast, while a tiny flag—the dearly loved red, white and blue—fluttered beside the marble tombstone.” So begins Gilbert Patten’s seemingly long-lost piece “Asleep At His Post” published as the lead piece of the May 1897 “Standard Storyteller” out of Bryant’s Pond in Maine. The story soon turns deep introducing the lead character, an old veteran with an old grudge and a new battle. At the center of the front page, framed by the text of the story, is a beautiful patriotic Art Nouveau style illustration commemorating Decoration Day (Memorial Day). William George “Gilbert” Patten (1866-1945), aka Burt L. Standish, gained fame as the writer of over 200 Frank Merriwell dime novels using the Standish pseudonym, one of many he used. He is one of many writers represented in these issues including Mary Clarke Huntington, Florence B. Hallowell, and David A. Curtis. This lot contains 4 issues of this exceptionally scarce “Standard Storyteller”. We could find hardly any references at all to this publication online. The newspapers are marked in part as follows: STANDARD STORYTELLER. BRYANT’S POND, MAINE, NOVEMBER, 1896. VOLUME VIII. NUMBER 11; STANDARD STORYTELLER. BRYANT’S POND, MAINE, DECEMBER, 1896. VOLUME VIII. NUMBER 12; STANDARD STORYTELLER. BRYANT’S POND, MAINE, MAY, 1897. VOLUME IX. NUMBER 5; and STANDARD STORYTELLER. BRYANT’S POND, MAINE, NOVEMBER, 1897. VOLUME IX. NUMBER 11. The newspapers have many stories, advertisements, illustrated images, and more throughout them. Each newspaper page measures roughly 11” x 15”. The newspapers have creases, folds, yellowing, discoloration, wrinkles, edge wear, tears, missing edge and/or corner pieces, and dirty and/or stained areas (see photos). All of the newspapers appear to be comprised of a single intentionally uncut poster-like sheet that is approximately 44” x 30” overall when unfolded (approximately A0 size). The newspapers would need to be cut to be read in a normal manner if the new owner so desires.
