The world's very first polymer banknote & Australia's first commemorative note.

The introduction of polymer technology to Australia's banknotes in 1988 sent the numismatic world into a spin.

Not only did the new notes look and feel completely different to traditional paper notes, they survived in circulation for far longer. Governments around the world were quick to contact Australia's NPA to enquire about the new technology.

The notes weren't as warmly received by the Australian public however, with many defaced by people looking to test the durability and anti-tampering qualities of the new notes. The first batch released into circulation was quickly cut short - a second release was only made once problems with the hologram were solved.

A different release of notes housed in special presentation folders for sale to the general public was made through banks - these notes featured "AA" serials, and could not be obtained from circulation.

This note remains strictly UNC, and comes in the original folder it was issued in.
