Rainbow Rising LIMITED EDITION 180 GRAM LP

Initially perceived as a Ritchie Blackmore solo project, Rainbow had become a permanent fixture in the British rock atmosphere by the time the band was ready to follow-up its breakthrough debut. For Rising, Blackmore had replenished Rainbow with a colorful arsenal of accomplished sidemen and studio musicians; keyboardist Tony Carey, bassist Jimmy Bain and drummer Cozy Powell. But the main event here is Ronnie James Dio, who establishes himself as one of heavy metal's most influential vocalists.

The presence of the new lineup is immediately felt. The keyboard intro to ''Tarot Woman'' sets a sorcerous tone for the album. Carey's dexterous playing paired with Powell's thunderous drumming provides a cavernous sonic template for Blackmore chugging riffs and sparking leads. Dio's lyrical trademarks are all here: tales of wizards, magic and kings, as well as foreboding of the darkness that lurks ahead. The epic ''Stargazer,'' which features a 42-piece orchestra, and the equally ambitious, nine-minute ''A Light In the Black'' - an indisputably thrilling one-two punch - close out the album.

Rising announced Rainbow's arrival as a new voice in metal, establishing many elements that would shape the genre for decades to come. Complete with a faithful replication of the original gatefold sleeve and dead-quiet surfaces, this Wax Cathedral reissue is pressed at RTI. Even better, it's on colored vinyl.

THEN WE HAVE THIS LIVE SECTION - Rainbow Live In Munich 1977 EAGLE ROCK RECORDS 2013 LIMITED EDITION 2 LP SET

Live Album On Vinyl Double LP! PRESSED IN 2013

This live album was recorded at Munich Olympiahalle, Germany on October 20, 1977 in Munich featuring the lineup of Ritchie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell, Bob Daisley and Dave Stone. This set is not from the same tour that produced the previously released live album "On Stage" and features a different line up (bass player and keyboardist change).

"Oh Yeah. When Rainbow's On Stage album was released in 1977, it felt like a flat representation of what the band were capable of live. With a few personnel changes, the group went out on tour in 1977 to support a live album -- the membership changes prevented them form working on a third studio album at the time. This live document is a complete live concert without any real production. It's simply the band playing their asses off in October 1977. Here are Ritchie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell, Bob Daisley, and David Stone, roaring through a set unencumbered. While the tracks closely resemble those on the live Rainbow album, they run in a different order (and alas, "Stargazer" is still not present; it wasn't played on this night). The "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves" played here (clocking in at eight-and-21-seconds) shreds the On Stage version, as does the thrashing opener "Kill the King." Both of these cuts were played faster and louder than anything the Sex Pistols did that year. "Catch the Rainbow" catches fire about seven-and-a-half minutes in, and Blackmore just takes off prodded on by Powell, and the cut doesn't end until ten minutes after that. The second disc is where the real treasure lies in perhaps the best rendition of "Man on the Silver Mountain," which clocks in at a whopping fourteen-and-a-half minutes, followed by a 25-minute "Still I'm Sad," only to be closed out with a smoking "Do You Close Your Eyes." Blackmore's playing, hell, the whole band's, is just full-on stun. It's tight, incredibly fast, and unfettered raw Rainbow. This is the deliverance on the promise of '70s hard rock. Get this one. No matter what; just get it." - Thom Jurek, allmusic

Rainbow On Stage LIMITED EDITION 2 LP 180 GRAM UNIVERSAL BACK TO BLACK SERIES SET

Classic 1977 Double Album Among Decade's Pivotal Live Records! Pressed on 180 GRAM VINYL!

"I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore. We must be over the rainbow!" The famous Wizard of Oz introduction sets the mood for the thrills, imagination, and aural adventurous that is Rainbow's classic double live album On Stage. Recorded in late 1976, approximately one year before front man Ronnie James Dio's departure from the band, the set stands as one of the decade's pivotal concert records. On par with Kiss' Alive, UFO's Strangers in the Night, and Deep Purple's Made In Japan, the effort teems with blistering performances and unfettered energy.

Freed from the confines of the studio, Dio and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore instill passionate bravado and swagger to every song they attack. At the peak of his powers, Dio sings with leather-lunged gusto and theatrical purpose, hitting seemingly impossible highs and reaching down to bring dark overtones to the lows. His melancholic showing on a cover of Deep Purple's "Mistreated" blows away the original. As a perfect foil, Blackmore takes the opportunity to stretch out solos and indulge in bluesy improvisations, turning "Man on the Silver Mountain" into a multi-part medley and the slowly building, fantasy-themed "Catch the Rainbow" into an epic workout.

Rainbow's rhythm section is equally inspired. Drummer Cozy Powell jump-starts high-voltage passages with urgent beats and timely playing. In sync with the irreplaceable contributions of organist/keyboardist Tony Carey, bassist Jimmy Bain supplies a taut foundation. On Stage is in effect a document of a vital hard-rock band pushing itself to the maximum and succeeding in taking its audiences on an unforgettable journey. Blackmore's inventive passages and colorful tones are alone worth the price of admission.

Martin Birch's steady, lively production puts it over the top. Unlike many heavily edited albums from the era, Powell is heard front and center, the drums given as much space and presence as Blackmore's humming guitar, Dio's inimitable singing, and Carey's howling organ. You're given an invitation to stand onstage with the quintet.

Pressed on green-colored vinyl at RTI and presented in a faithful reproduction of the original gatefold sleeve, Wax Cathedral's deluxe reissue of this live scorcher renders the music in the highest fidelity it's ever enjoyed.

Always meant to be heard since its original release in 1977, On Stage is restored to all its glory.
