One of the young ladies at the beach is Julie Manet, who was Berthe Morisot's daughter and Edouard Manet's niece; the other was her cousin Jeanne, and they also appear in other Renoir compositions

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919)

Renoir was born as the son of a tailor couple. He started his career as a painter in a porcelain manufactory. He soon became one of the manufactory’s best painters. Unfortunately, the company had to close when Renoir was only 17 years old. The young artist was forced to earn his living by occasional jobs. He began studying painting at the age of 20 but instead of adopting the classical academic style his teachers taught him, he found himself influenced by befriended artists such as Courbet, Monet and Sisley. In 1864 he exhibited for the first time in the Parisian Salon. During the 1870s, Renoir moved between the classical manner of painting and the upcoming impressionism. He applied for the Salon of the Academy whilst helping organizing the first impressionist exhibition. Influenced by a trip to Italy and especially by the works of Ingres and Raphael, he turned towards classicism. Later, however, Renoir returned to a lighter, impressionist manner of painting. In 1900 the artist’s reputation was consolidated thanks to a retrospective exhibition at the Paris Autumn Salon. Due to an illness, Renoir moved to the countryside in later life where he kept painting with a brush tied to his hand until his death.
