This grain size comparator is for use in estimating grain size in the McQuaid - Ehn carburizing test each individual transparency represents an idealized grain size at 100 diameters magnification.
Number one grain size signifies that the micro-structure as viwed at 1 00 diameters has nominally one grain per square inch. The mean number of grains per square inch is two for grain size number 2,4 for number 3 and so on by geometric progression to 128 grains per square inch for number 8 grain size.
