This is an antique solid silver snuff box with gilt interior.

Reeded lid, base and sides...with the rectangular floral raised bit on the centre of the lid.

It is fully hallmarked for London 1817 with maker's mark JL. John Linnit

Hallmarked on the underside of the lid as well as in the base.

It has a small pencil written letter inside which says

Silver Snuff Box

Presented to my Great Great Grandfather Mr W. Marshall who lived at Langton, near Dalton by Sir Charles Slingsby about the year 1798. signed

S.E. Hodgson.

Clearly this person has the date wrong ...but they MAY not have known the date of the silver box... it is probably true and has been passed down the family and the date has been written wrong. The place Langton near Dalton could read near Darlington ..but a shortened version of Dal ton or its not a D, plus the Marshall surname ..I may have read that wrong.

This chap Sir Charles Slingsby 1777 - 1832 and family can be traced way back to the Elizabethan times and Henry Slingsby was Sheriff of Yorkshire and an MP for Knaresborough as well as being  knighted by Queen Elizabeth I in about 1602, he was Chief Forester of the Parks and Forests of Knaresborough. They had an estate at Scriven near Knaresborough. As well as a property called RED HOUSE at Scagglethorpe.  Interesting too if you read about the Tragedy of Newby Ferry - Newby Hall ..its related to the family.

In later years the family lived at Romanby Park at Northallerton.

In excellent collectable condition with little signs of age and use wear. No damage to the silverware from what I can see but the hallmark in the base is very sightly worn.

The lid fits snug and its a really fabulous snuff box.
Please see pictures for more details.

It measures approx. 75mm x 50mm x 15mm...it weighs approx....101.8grams.

A very nice antique silver snuff box with great history behind it.
