USS AYLWIN DD-355 Naval cover for this proud destroyer that was moored in port

and fired on enemy planes during the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. First Day Cover

postmarked on March 19, 2013 at San Francisco, CA. Blue photo of the USS Aylwin

on cachet #6195 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. This 341 foot Farragut Class destroyer

was built in Philadelphia, PA and commissioned in 1935.

This very active vessel fought in the Pacific Theater and earned 13 WW II battle stars.

The ship was ordered to Midway in 1942, served off the Alutians, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.

 USS Aylwin also survived two typhoons in 1944 and 1945, rescued USS Indianapolis

survivors and was decommissioned in October 1945.
