Papinius Statius was a 1st-century Roman poet remembered for
his epic poems ‘Thebaid’, ‘Silvae’ and ‘Achilleid’. These works tell famous stories of mythology and iconic
heroes – namely Oedipus and Achilles. These poems were known to have had
significant influence on Juvenal as well as into the 12th-century on
Chaucer, Dante, and Boccaccio as well as Dryden and Grotius in the Renaissance.
This 1671 Hackiana edition was collected and edited by Johannes
Veenhusen and includes small woodcut engravings of medals, as well as a ‘life
of Statius’ by 15th-century Italian poet Giglio Gregorio Giraldi.
