1976-79 O PORSCHE 934 RSR

GT Champion, 1976 World Sportscar Championship, driven by Toine Hezemans

TOINE HEZEMANS, A WELL-KNOWN DUTCH TOURINGCAR AND PROTOTYPE RACING DRIVER OF THE LATE SIXTIES AND EARLY SEVENTIES, DROVE A WIDE VARIETY OF CARS THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER. GEORGE LOOS' GELO RACING TEAM HIRED HEZEMANS IN 1975 TO CONTEST THE EUROPEAN GT CHAMPIONSHIP IN A PORSCHE CARRERA RSR. THE DUTCHMAN SCORED FOUR PODIUM FINISHES AND EARNED HIMSELF A THIRD PLACE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

Gelo Racing prepared a new Porsche 934 RSR Turbo with which Hezemans would contest all seven rounds of the 1976 Championship. Behind the wheel of the familiar red Porsche with white doors, he was unbeatable on the track. When he finished, he finished first!

Victories came at the first three races of the season: Nurburgring, Zeltweg and the Norisring. The fifth race of the season, a 6 hour event at Monza, he was paired with experienced Porsche drivers, Tim Schenken and Klaus Ludwig. Together they scored Gelo's fourth victory on the season. Imola resulted in a DNF. The final event at Hockenheim was actually a pair of sprint races. Hezemans proved beyond a shadow of a doubt who was the 1976 European GT Champion by scoring victories in both heats! At the end of the year, Hezemans 100 points eclipsed second place man, Kelleners', 57; a testament to the speed and reliability of both car and driver. His success also earned him a runner up position in the Porsche Cup.
