The early work by the Cuban composer Esteban Salas in this recording, the Officium Hebdomadae Sanctae, is bound to remind us of Tomás Luis de Victoria. Its style and workmanship are very much in the tradition of sombre Castilian polyphony, as is underlined here by the combination of the ensembles Ars Longa and Camerata Vocale Sine Nomine in an ample sonic perspective. The beautifully fashioned 'Misa de difuntos' that follows, genuinely dramatic in character, is another worthy example of the gifts of Esteban Salas that displays the less 'classical' side to his music, here more influenced by the Baroque aesthetic.
