DESCRIPTION:
Antique Danish Gustavian grandfather clock with carved hand painted falu red and gilt long case with original working 8 day movement.
The tall case in typical Gustavian form with hand painted finish and with gold leaf gilt highlights to carvings and patina. A carved arch top crown moulding above the clock case of the provincial Empire period of neoclassical design.
This clock demonstrates the sharing and inspiration of styles between the three Scandinavian kingdoms or Norway, Denmark and Sweden in the 18th century.
The brass clock mechanism with top mounted large bell and twin cast iron weights. The bell strikes the hour count. A long brass pendulum is housed within the case. The clock face with silvered and engraved Roman numerals in black on silver with the black cut brass hands . The dial is engraved and silvered and the clock most likely dates to early 1800's .
Original two train movement with winding key. The door to the pendulum case with steel spring lock and steel key.
The hand painted case with top mounted glass door clock cabinet or surrounded and two glass side windows.
The main body with a solid fielded panel door to front for pendulum and weight access with traditional steel key on spring lock. The Gustavian carved mouldings to the case in the provincial manner complete with traditional 18th century pegged joints.
A shaped neoclassical wreath and swags carved to the front of the base of the clock and on pyramidic shaped pedestal.
A history of the clock has been inscribed to the central door but may well be a family recollection rather than its actual history.
