Catholic teaching regarding prayers for the dead is bound up inseparably with the doctrine of Purgatory and the more general doctrine of the Communion of Saints. Purgatory is, according to the belief of some Christians, an intermediate state after physical death for expiatory purification. There is disagreement among Christians whether such a state exists. Some forms of Western Christianity, particularly within Protestantism, deny its existence.
