From the front inside fly leaf: The authors have had a lifelong interest in the industrial railways of South Lancashire. Visits made there in the late 1940s and early 1950s aroused their enthusiasm and they set out to learn as much as they could about the history of the railway systems and the enterprises which they served.

The book which they have written, based on their researches, spans more than two hundred years, from the short horse worked tram roads of the latter half of the seventeenth century to the almost total demise of the colliery railways in the 1970s and 1980s. The main purpose has been to trace the development of the railway systems connected with industries in and around Wigan and the locomotives which were used on them. However, this is not a subject which can be considered in isolation and the authors have provided a wealth of information about the history of the mines and associated works in the area which they have studied. They have also provided a brief outline of the development of the canals and the public railways which served the district.

This book... will be of value to everyone interested in the local and industrial history of South Lancashire as well as to the railway historian. They are well illustrated with over 100 photographs and 55 large scale maps. A comprehensive list of references is provided, which forms an important source of material for readers who wish to undertake further and more detailed research of their own.

The condition of the book is generally very good. The dust jacket has one or two minor scuffs and some light wear along the edges and corners, but the spine is tight and intact, and all pages are clean, intact, unblemished and tightly bound.
