- The form of Ganesh with three heads is called the Trimukha Ganapathi
- Ganesha's 3 heads depict the 3 states of being inherent in any manifestation, which are named the Guna
- Above
Ganesh looms a beautiful carving of Mahakala along with two flying
celestial beings. Along the base are two yalis as well as Mooshika
- A stunning carving of Ganesha!
The three headed, 6 armed Ganesh, known as Trimukha Ganapathi, is seated
on a beautiful blooming lotus base. The three heads of Trimukha
Ganapathi depict the three states of being inherent in any
manifestation, the Guna, of purity (sattva), activity (rajas) and lethargy (tamas).
In his 6 hands he holds, his broken tusk he used to write the
Mahabharata epic, a brush, an ax, noose sheild and a bowl of sweets
called ladus which his trunk is eagerly pursueing. The ax symbolizes
the destruction of desires and attachments, and all their results like
troubles and sorrows.
Above Ganesh in the magnificently carved and
painted arch is Mahakala the devourer or "great time" as in the end,
time devours everything. Mahakala is typically seen in arches in
statuary and above doorways in Hindu homes and temples. Flanking
Mahakala are two flying celestial beings. On both sides of the base are
two yalis. A yali
is a mythical beast usually a combination of a lion head and body with
tusks of an elephant and tail of a snake. His vehicle or vahana,
a rat is seated with a crumb in his hands looking up at his lord,
Ganesh. Since rats are seen as being capable of gnawing their way
through most things, the rat symbolizes Ganesh's ability to destroy
every obstacle. Ganesh is large and very impressive.
The painting scheme is adopted from the bright colors used in south Indian temples. The temples are known for their large gopurams or towers that rise up into the sky decorated with various gods and goddesses. The gopurams are painted in vibrant colors which mirror the vibrant life of south India.
