Jean d'Esme (27 September 1894 – 24 February 1966) was a French writer and journalist.

Son of an Indochinese customs official from Reunion Island, Jean’Esme studied in Paris and in 1914 entered the Indochinese section of the Colonial School. He turned to journalism and travel and took the pseudonym Jean d'Esme. He works in the editorial office or in the direction of the newspapers Je sais tout, Le Matin et l'Intransigeant.

In 1936, he made a film in the eastern region of Niger: La Grande Caravane, about the journey of a caravan to the salt mines of Bilma.

He writes a series of articles for L'Écho de Paris on his impressions in Ethiopia. He became a specialist in the colonial novel, the best known and most original of which was Les Dieux Rouges, a fantastic novel set in French Indochina.

In 1936, director of Paris-Soir reporting during the Spanish Civil War, he was imprisoned by Franco's troops for having filmed in prohibited areas.

In 1941, at the request of the Youth Secretariat of the Vichy Government, he directed in Ramatuelle the film "Four of tomorrow" on the subject of the story of a village in France which under the blow of defeat regains confidence and courage. following the visit of a group of Compagnons de France (scouts). Most of the inhabitants of Ramatuelle took part in the filming, including the president of the legion, the mayor, the parish priest, the teacher, the gardener and the postman, in their own role1.

He writes many children's books, notably for the Green Library collection of Hachette editions.

Jean d´Esme is a member of the Academy of Overseas Sciences, president of the Society of Maritime and Colonial Writers and of the Society of Men of Letters, which he chaired from 1955-1956. A college, built in 1976, bears his name in Sainte-Marie (Reunion).(source: wikipedia)
