Glider Pilots at Arnhem, by Mike Peters and Luuk Buist

Published by Pen & Sword in 2009, 356 pages. Hardback with Dust Jacket (A13B)

Inscription on the title page reads: 'To Eddie, Happy Landings, Mike Peters, 17 Sep 09'

From the inside front fly leaf: While the momentous struggle between the British 1st Airborne Division and the superior German forces that confronted them at Arnhem is well documented, works on the heroic contribution of the men of the Glider Pilot Regiment (GPR) are rare. The men of this unique volunteer regiment flew wooden assault gliders into battle, often in the face of enemy fire. Trained to be 'Total Soldiers', once on the ground the GPR fought alongside the men they had carried to their landing zones. They were involved in the initial defence of the LZs, before fighting house-to-house leading mixed groups of infantrymen, gunners, medics and engineers. In so doing a regiment that began the battle at its zenith suffered the highest casualty rate of 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem. Tragically the GPR was never to recover from these losses.

This thoroughly researched book tells the story of their outstanding contribution. Through extensive use of previously unpublished veterans' accounts, the reader is taken through the increasingly fierce fighting around the ever shrinking Oosterbeek perimeter. Finally the stalwart survivors of the GPR marked the evacuation route for those battered remnants of 1st Airborne Division as they withdrew across the Rhine thereby avoiding
Captivity.

The condition of the book is generally very good. The dust jacket has one or two very minor scuffs but is clean and bright, the spine is intact, and all pages are intact, unblemished and tightly bound. There are a couple of very small yellow blemishes on the inside front cover.

When we post our books, we take great care in packaging them - first your book will be wrapped in bubblewrap, which protects the book and even keeps out any rain (in the event that it's raining when the postie delivers it!). Then we wrap your book in stiff cardboard, taking care to make sure all the corners are protected, and finally the package is wrapped in thick brown paper.
