Photographs taken outside with natural light.
This is an antique pair of embroidered EARL - COUNTESS related armorial coats of arms that are sat unattached on a red velvet pillow - cushion.
The red velvet pillow is very tired and most of the red velvet has gone.. its bare and well worn. The tassels are cream and pink and they are not so bad. The cushion - pillow could well be a different period to the coats of arms.
It has probably been sat on a chair in an open window fading away.
I have kept it with the pair of armorial coats of arms as it came in with them. ( if you do NOT want the cushion the shipping will be slightly cheaper so do let me know - also my price is based on the pair of coats of arms )
The coats of arms may NOT be related either but in my opinion they are two different families that were probably married.
Both have different back material which is quite coarse and wide weft n warp threads compared to the front.
The fronts.
The coats of arms are mainly silk material on the top with different colours with fine bullion thread embroidery and sequin beads. The one with the red fleur de lis like design has padded devices too opposite. Rather like stump work , STAR - CIRCLE - HEART in each of the centres of these is another material, copper I can see and other stones maybe.
Sorry I do not know all the jargon with the type of needlework - stitches etc used on them. They will have taken a good considerable time to create.
These will have looked much more vibrant colours when new as I can see the bullion wire has greened.
Both Crowns are those of either Earl or Countess with 5 pearls on the top .. you will see these have 3 raised bullion wire circles inset with 3 red paste stones and the other has 3 inset pearl like paste stones.
The embroidery is damaged in places. The arms with less devices on it has really faded on the main shield shape and this could well be older than the other on which seems to have faired better.
The cushion is worn and the velvet is patchy. No maker's marks etc.
In collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear. As mentioned, all pieces are faded and there are bald patches on the cushion. There may be loose threads and beads missing from the crests etc. They are not without issue but I do believe these to be worthwhile coats of arms.
If you have the time to research the heraldic arms then I think that would be very interesting and they may well turn out to be an important family. I am all ears if anyone can tell me.
Please see pictures for more details and visual confirmation of condition.
The crests measure approx. 9 inches x 7 inches.
The cushion measures approx. 17 inches x 11 inches.
