‘GOD SAVE THE KING’ around the right-hand edge, with ‘JUNE 1911’, the month and year of the new king’s coronation, appearing along the bottom.
Britannia stands on the left, holding a shield that displays the Union flag in her right hand, and resting her trident (symbol of her mastery over the sea) on the large shield facing the viewer. The label ‘EMPIRE’ at the top of the shield indicates that it symbolises the lands that made up the British Empire in 1911.
