ABOUT THE LOCK'S MANUFACTURER:  Medeco was established in 1968 named after "Mechanical Development Company."  The company was originally founded in the mid-1950's by Paul A. Powell and Roy C. Spain in a basement.

Mr. Spain later designed the lock's concepts and received a United States Patent No. 3,499,303 (in 1970) for his new lock, which subsequently began Medeco as a company.

As a promotional campaign, Medeco advertised that anyone who could pick a Medeco lock would receive $50,000. Many tried, and failed. Except for one detective from New York City:  He was able to pick the lock once, but not twice.

Mr. Spain's unique locking principle of angled key cuts (which elevated & rotated pin tumblers) provided millions of key combinations - - - a level of security that was unmatched at the time. The locks were highly resistant to most forms of attack. The company expanded rapidly and contracted its original name ("Mechanical Development Company") into Medeco. The company's 130,000-square-foot facility in Salem, Virginia was opened in the mid 1970's.

In 1998, ASSA ABLOY Group acquired Medeco thirty-years after it condensed its name.  The ASSA ABLOY Group was formed through the merger of ASSA in Sweden and Abloy in Finland. The new company was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange on November 8, 1994.  Gobbling up companies worldwide since its inception, ASSA ABLOY Group is a huge conglomerate specializing in access control and high-security products.
