Just before the death of historian Danny Goble, he and fellow Oklahoman David Baird (history, Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA) finished this second edition of their history of their native state from the first human inhabitants to the present. Written in a narrative style, it is accessible even to high school students. Reminding the reader that a quarter of a million Native Americans still live in Oklahoma, the first half of th follows the settlement of the first tribes, their conflicts with later arrivals and how the Europeans, beginning with the Spanish and French, exacerbated problems by trading guns to both sides. They also give the background on tribes settled by the United States government, such as the Cherokee. The settlement of the territory by Americans, particularly after the Civil War, produced new problems not just between "the farmer and the cowhand" but former soldiers from North and South, along with a Black population trying to build a new life. The oil boom proved lucrative to the Osage tribe as well as others. Using lively stories as well as hard facts, the authors explain how Okalahoma today is unique and why it came to be so. An appendix gives a guide to places of historic interest for those who wish to be more than armchair historians. This is a paperback reprint of a work first published in cloth in 2008.
