Three-page letter datelined "March the 2 1846 Robert Ashby Young Street" immediately going into content "I received a letter from you the 14 of February Dated February the 2 in Windsor Post the 11 and in New Market Post the 13 and I received it the 14.  Windsor is on the Canada Side, Detroit on United Side."

Addressed to "Mr. Robert Philip, Prarieville Post Office, Wisconsin Territory, Milwaukee County."

On the obverse in the lower left "NEW MARKET U.C. MAR 9 1846" interconnecting with a "LEWISTON Me. MAR 9"

On the obverse a "10" in red matching the Lewiston datestamp, crossed out and "Paid" written to join the "Paid" at the far left top.  A "7" is at the top right, making me think about a 5¢ rate plus a 2¢ ship's captain fee.

On the obverse in the lower right a "A 2c" marking reinforcing the ship's captain's fee.

On the reverse "London" and "Paid Paid" in manuscript make me feel - combined with other covers from this same correspondence - that the "Young Street" is in London.

No typical London markings.  I believe this was privately carried by a Ship Captain to New Windsor, Canada and deposited there.

Ultimately, a buyer can decide the story.

Content continues (with spelling corrected):

"Dear Daughter and Son and Grand Children...I have never been better in my life since I have been in America..."

And that sentence then makes me wonder, did this item FIRST land at Lewiston Maine and the postmaster there applied a "10" and then re-rated to a "7" (5¢ + 2¢) and THEN it crossed to New Windsor, Canada and then it went to the addressee in Wisconsin Territory, making this a twice-crossed item.

Ultimately, a buyer will decide.

**And to make matters more interesting, a similar cover from this correspondence clearly originated in New Market and went to Toronto before crossing at Lewiston, Maine**

Content continues (with spelling mostly corrected): "I have not heard from England since I had a letter from my brother Joseph when I wrote to you from Rochester.  How my Brother Richard's property is I know not but I think it comes to me....

"....Need not expect me at your house.  My next voyage will be to England but I will write to you before I go.  It will not be till the later end of the summer....A letter came to Rochester that I was married.  The letter came from Precilla to George Williams...

"I made an offer to a woman and she said I was too late.  Her husband been dead 3 weeks.  I was with her husband when he died.  I 'noed' I was too late, that was the reason I made a offer.  Her husband was 86 years of age.

"I lived in Young Street till I was tired of my living so then I went to live with Wm. Webster.  The Live Well and more in an English way.

"I not think of Susana, whether she is in Rochester or in Canada.  She had 3 'troyals' it cost me 28 pounds 15 shilling English money for the employed 2 lawyers and I employed one I do not know what it cost them.  I did give Susana 2 boxes of her clothes and then the rest went to Law with me for the other one box with her bonnets in it the other lite things in it.  The other box was one I made....the box was heavy, her husband tried to go on again but he did not know how to make it work and did not like the other expense.  I think it cost me 35 sovrens in all the Law.

"Dr. Parkins 'recets' how to make salves for all wounds.  It is the same as Waits salve, but there is two things more than three is in Waits salve, the 2 recet at the Later end of teh Herbal.

Then two detailed instruction lists for making Salve.

"I am your well wishes Father Robert Ashby."
