Philippe de
La Hire was a French scholar who best-known for his works in mathematics,
mechanics, and astronomy. Though, perhaps his best work was a conglomeration of
all his studies – ‘Gnomonics – Universal
Methods of Sundials’. While studying astronomy at the French Academy of
Sciences, Hire took a fascination in the movements and phases of the Sun, Moon,
and other celestial bodies. He took an interest in the processes in making
sundials and published his book on the subject in 1682. This 1698 edition of
Hire’s “Gnomonics” includes folding
engravings and full-page charts and tables.
