Contents: Author describes growing up during the Great Depression in Altoona, Alabama. Among his memories are his early school days,selling Cloverine Salve and how hard he tried to earn that bicycle. He reminisces about the food of the times; an egg feast; rampaging through a watermelon field; and his sad experience with the Farabee Tobacco Company.
Intermingled with his schooling was a period when he was a hobo, riding the rails all over the country, and having some wild experiences while doing so. Finally, with WW II imminent, and a wife and family to support, our author settled down and worked at various jobs, ranging from construction work to the atomic bomb plant at Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
