Vintage Hand-Woven Home Decor Plate Basket This is one of our earliest plate baskets. It was made in a village called Sambu deep in the Darien jungle near Colombia. The fiber comes from a palm and the artists call it chunga. The dyes are all natural. Plate baskets are usually used to decorate walls. This plate basket is oval in design, measuring 11" x 9". Pink, gold, brown and white. Use a needle and thread to make a loop on the back. The Plate Baskets are hand woven using natural fibers found in the forest. A variety of reeds and palm fibers are normally used. Chunga, the fiber of the black palm, is the fiber of choice among the weavers. The colors are produced with natural extracts of plants and earth, using the traditional methods for dyeing Plate Basket fibers. Seldom, if ever, are two Plate Baskets alike. The original designs usually portray life in the village, local animals and insects, or plant life.
